Northeast Ohio incorporates a 13-county region that includes: Ashtabula, Columbiana, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit, Trumbull and Wayne counties. The region is bordered on the north by Lake Erie, the fourth largest lake in the United States with 132 trillion gallons of water.

According to 2002 US Census data, Northeast Ohio boasts a population of over four million individuals, representing over 35 percent of the total population in the state of Ohio. Its most populous county, Cuyahoga, has a population in excess of 1.3 million persons and includes the city of Cleveland. The area incorporates 6306 square miles, slightly greater than 15 percent of the total land mass in Ohio.
